Planning a destination wedding in Mendocino? This Valentine’s weekend engagement session at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is proof that the coast shows up beautifully year-round — even in February. If you’re dreaming of Mendocino engagement photos that feel natural, romantic, and rooted in place, you’re in the right spot.

Caitlyn and Andrew spent Valentine’s weekend in Mendocino — which makes perfect sense because February has always been their month. It’s when he first asked her to be his girlfriend. Now they’re getting married next February.
Full circle energy.
Before their Mendocino engagement photos, we grabbed coffee and caught up. We laughed about how Caitlyn’s parents were also randomly on a romantic getaway in Mendocino that same weekend. We joked about running into them during the session.
Foreshadowing.
Why the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens Is Perfect for Engagement Photos
Even in February, the gardens were vibrant. Camellias in bloom. Lush greenery. Pops of color against that soft grey coastal sky.
As a Mendocino photographer, I love this location because:
- 47 acres of gardens + coastal bluffs
- Ocean views without a long hike
- Year-round color (even in winter)
- Wind-protected pockets (coast couples know why this matters)
- Variety in one location
It gives you range without rushing. And that’s where the magic happens.
We kept the session loose and natural. Walking. Laughing. Taking our time. No stiff posing — just connection.

The Most Mendocino Moment Ever
At one point, we ran into a man who was about seven feet tall, walking two German Shepherds, wearing a neck brace, and handing out business cards.
He was incredibly nice.
It was slightly surreal.
It was peak Mendocino.
And honestly? Sharing weird, unexpected moments like that is what bonds us before your wedding day. Engagement sessions aren’t just photos — they’re shared experiences.
Princess Diaries Energy
I always tell my couples: if you have a pose you want to try, tell me.
Your inside jokes belong in your photos.
So yes — we absolutely did the “Princess Diaries” kiss with the leg pop.
Iconic. Personal. Very them.
And Then… The Parents
Remember the romantic getaway coincidence?
At the very end of the session — who shows up but Caitlyn’s parents.
We had been joking about it and there they were.
The sweetest people. All love. So excited. Completely delighted to see us.
It felt less like an interruption and more like a cameo.
Very on-brand for a couple whose love story centers around February, family, and celebrating intentionally.
